Dr. Simon Curtis researches the relationship between cities, infrastructure and global power.
His recent book, The Belt and Road City, examined how China’s Belt and Road Initiative underpins its rising global influence and its long-term grand strategy. He is particularly interested in how democracies can build institutions and infrastructures that can enable them to compete strategically over the long term. His earlier book, Global Cities and Global Order was awarded the ECPR Hedley Bull Prize.
He is an Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Surrey, and an Honorary Professor at the University of East Anglia. He was previously a Senior Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
His research appears in peer reviewed journals such as: Review of International Studies; Millennium; Global Studies Quarterly; International Relations. He writes for general audiences in outlets such as Foreign Affairs and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
