AI needs its own sovereign fund

In his recent fDi Intelligence commentary, DRI WISC Affiliate Faculty Winston Ma argues that as artificial intelligence creates unprecedented economic value, governments should establish sovereign wealth funds that convert a portion of AI-generated wealth into long-term public capital. Drawing on examples from the United States, South Korea, and Singapore, he contends that well-designed public investment vehicles can deliver broad public benefits while avoiding conflicts between regulation and ownership. Rather than focusing solely on distributing AI-generated wealth through citizen dividends, he argues that governments should also reinvest those proceeds to build future national capabilities, creating a lasting public asset that compounds over time.
